WITH reference to my despatch No. 16, Confidential, of the 20th August last, I have the honour to inclose copy of a despatch which I addressed to-day to Sir E. Satow, reporting the commencement of removal works on the barriers in the Canton River.

IN continuation of my despatch No. 70, Confidential, of the 20th August last, I have the honour to report that tenders for the works mentioned in the advertisement which was inclosed in that despatch were accepted towards the end of September, and that actual removal of the iron and wood barriers commenced on the 5th instant. Since then a beginning has also been made on the "Tai Shek," or Stone barrier.
On the 23rd ultimo I applied to the Commissioner of Customs officially for detailed information of the scope of the barrier works immediately contemplated. This information has been promised, but has not yet reached me,
